At Malvern Prep there was an NBA Statistics Micro Course being offered, and a ton of kids were excited to participate. It was held in Sullivan 109 on Thursdays from February 15th-March 7th. Through this course, we learned how to take basketball stats. If you participated in the course you embarked on a journey through the fast-paced realm of basketball analytics, exploring everything from player efficiency to team performance.
I asked Miss. McMonagle a few questions, as she helped moderate the Micro Course. When she was asked about how she thinks kids can use the skills from the course and incorporate them into other subjects, she emphasizes how students will be able to understand that there isn’t just one thing you need to answer math questions. Miss. M. also added that students may need to use different skills in order to find a solution. Lastly when I asked Miss. McMonagle on what she thinks students should take away from the course, she said, “I believe that the students will take away all the different factors that go into the NBA and be able to transfer it to different sports if they wanted to.” It seems like Miss. M. is confident and excited to see kids use the components that they learn and use them in different, efficient ways.
Moving on the course had many different aspects to it. At some points it would be discussion-oriented, and then other parts were about learning how to use the statistics. During discussion, the group talked about different NBA players’ statistics and key parts you can use to compare to players. At other points, the facilitator would tell us the importance of different skills in taking statistics.
Micro Courses are a great way to come together with others to learn something you might love. You will also never know when you need to use a skill in life or you might realize that a skill you learned already could help you. Coming to a conclusion, Micro Courses help extend your knowledge in unexpected ways.
