Fall sports at Malvern Prep bring together dedicated student-athletes who represent their school with pride and teamwork. Each fall, the school offers a variety of sports such as football, soccer, cross country, water polo, and golf. The goal of fall sports is to help students build character, stay physically active, and develop leadership and teamwork skills, which creates unity through our student body. Athletes train through daily practices, strength workouts, and game preparation, all while balancing their academic responsibilities. Overall, fall sports at Malvern Prep create a strong sense of community and school spirit that lasts long after the season ends.
Mr. Del, the coach of the Middle School Flag Football team, emphasizes how important coaching is to him. Mr. Del highlights why coaching is such a special experience for him; it is all about connection and passion. Mr. Del stated, “Coaching in the fall is a great opportunity to welcome the students back to campus as well as connect with new students.” This shows that fall sports aren’t all about the actual sport; they’re also about welcoming students back to school and building relationships that will last a long time. Next, Mr. Del explains how Fall Sports contribute to our brotherhood. He explained that since fall sports take place in colder weather, it reminds our students that summer is over and that it is time to come together as a community. Mr. Del also described how he got to become the head coach of the Middle School flag football team. Mr. Del explained that Mr. Boyle simply approached him and asked him if he was willing to be the first coach of the flag team, and of course, Mr. Del told Mr. Boyle that if the school wanted to start a team, he would be all for coaching. Lastly, Mr. Del states how the sport of flag football has grown within our school and the Inter-Ac. Mr. Del said, “Over the last 3 years, the program has grown tremendously. We not only have 25+ students on the team, but we also have other inter-ac schools building teams.” Mr. Del also highlighted how this opportunity has also helped create a chance for “Mini Tournaments” with other Inter-Ac teams.
Liam Sherwood, a Middle School football player who plays safety and kicker, explained what challenges and memories being a student athlete creates. First, Liam shared one of his favorite moments from his football season. He said, “When I kicked the extra point vs Penn Charter, it was very cool and was definitely my favorite part of the season, especially because everyone rallied behind me after I made the kick”. Next, Liam explained how his team found their brotherhood on the field. Liam states, “Every day, Monday through Thursday, we had practice. Through the hard practices when we had to sprint and hit we leaned on each other and picked one another up”. Lastly, Liam gives a behind-the-scenes look at how a student athlete like him at Malvern balances school and athletics. Liam explained that having community time to do work in advance, catch up on missing work, or meet with teachers was a huge part of balancing school and athletics. He also explains that keeping that balance could sometimes be hard due to practice, schoolwork, and sleep.
Overall, fall sports at Malvern Prep represent more than just competition—they embody teamwork, leadership, and school spirit. From the dedication of coaches like Mr. Del to the hard work and memorable moments shared by players like Liam Sherwood, each season strengthens the bond within the Malvern community. Whether on the field or in the classroom, these student-athletes learn the value of commitment and camaraderie that will last well beyond the fall season.
