New Year, new musical traditions, Liturgical Music makes a shift. Community responds.
Litmus Drama

Malvern’s Liturgical music has heavily impacted our community every other week by singing from their hearts, but now God Band is taking over for the entire year. Mr. Liga has worked hard to provide Mass with beautiful music, but unfortunately, they will no longer be singing at Mass. Because Catholic artists do not sing some songs presented at mass, they will not be allowed to sing at mass anymore.

Mr. Sammartino, an Upper School English teacher and member of the Liturgical Music band will miss the band play in mass.

“It’s disappointing to me that the Liturgical Music group’s presence has not been experienced during Mass this year. I have many great memories from both my time as a student and as a teacher listening and performing with the band. To me, Liturgical Music was always a great representation of the quote “We may not all be Catholic, but we’re all Augustinian” in that it was a group designed to be inclusive of secular songs and students who wanted to participate in an activity that brings them joy: creating music,” Sammartino said.

Gabe Bedwell, a Malvern Senior and member of the God Band, always wants to make each mass lively by using the talents God has given him.

“I do take pride in singing at mass every Wednesday. It shows a side of me that might not meet the eye at first glance, but nevertheless, music has held a strong grip on me since I was young,” Bedwell said.

Mr. DelPizzo, Upper School Music Teacher and Director of God Band gave his input on God Band singing every week.

“[Because God Band is singing every week], I’m going to try to start a middle school band and maybe a teacher band to help out. We’re just trying to get our footing; everything comes at you all at once,” DelPizzo said.

Nolan Murphy, Malvern Senior and God Band member, strongly feels about singing at Adeodatus. When asked if he enjoys Litmus bringing their talents on Adeodatus mornings, Nolan responded with a “No.”

Gabe Bedwell’s time as a student at Malvern is slowly coming to an end, and he has learned so much from Mr. Liga and Mr. DelPizzo.

“I want to thank everyone for their support throughout this journey, especially Mr. DelPizzo. He’s a great teacher and has taught me a lot [during] my time here with Malvern. I would like to add that Mr. Liga has done such a great job with his chorus and I feel for him when he can’t play for the school on Wednesdays anymore. He’s a great teacher and a great man who’s been through a lot but still manages to put a smile on his face and keep teaching,” Bedwell said.

As Malvern students, we have to realize that change is a good thing and that every decision made is made for a reason. The Litmus and God Band are amazing and talented groups of young gentlemen who use their talents to open the hearts of Malvern Students. On behalf of the Friar’s Lantern, thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.
