Disney’s film and series announcements include the reprisal of many roles, with each of them debuting on Disney Plus over the next few years. Overall, it is a great time to be a Star Wars or Marvel fan because of the original content being released.

This past December, Disney held its annual “Investor Day,” which frequently holds some considerable announcements for the company’s future.

At the event, Disney announced that there would be ten Star Wars and ten Marvel series coming to the Disney Plus streaming service. Additionally, several films are slated for theatrical release.

This move by Disney follows the huge success of the critically acclaimed The Mandalorian Star Wars series, which exclusively plays on Disney Plus. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy said that The Mandalorian had opened “an entirely new era for Star Wars.”

The Star Wars universe will be complemented with ten new series. Andor will be a prequel series to the film Rogue One; Obi-Wan Kenobi will feature Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor reprising their respective roles; Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka will both be connected to the same timeline as The Mandalorian through creative directors Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni; Lando will feature the suave smuggler; The Acolyte will take place during the High Republic, hundreds of years before The Phantom Menace; The Bad Batch will be a spinoff of the popular Clone Wars series; A Droid Story will follow the beloved R2-D2 and C-3PO; and Visions will be a collection of ten short films taking place at different points in the Star Wars universe. All of these series will stream on Disney Plus within the next few years.

In addition to the new series, the Star Wars universe will receive two new films: Director Taika Waititi will be working on an unnamed Star Wars film, and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins will direct Rogue Squadron, which focuses on a starfighter squadron formed by Luke Skywalker.

Marvel Studios released trailers for four series airing on Disney Plus: Wandavision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and What If? Additionally, six other series were announced: Hawkeye, Ironheart, Armor Wars, Secret Invasion, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel

A couple new Marvel films are also scheduled for theatrical release. The sequel to Black Panther is set to arrive in July of 2022. Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, confirmed that the film will not recast the late Chadwick Boseman, and that the film’s director is working on a new concept. Also slated for release are Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Blade, an untitled Spider-Man film, and a new Fantastic Four movie. Marvel stated that WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the third Spider-Man film are all connected.

Disney’s push to add even more content to Disney Plus means that fans can expect their respective cinematic or television universe to grow exponentially. This huge announcement will act as a harbinger showing Disney’s new drive to create original content for already existing universes.
