Sad feelings will always come with tragedy, but through the dust and dirt, we can always see a glimmer of hope, like a family member in the middle of a horrible earthquake, or an American flag still waving in the midst of 9/11.
Most students in the middle school have probably noticed this artwork on the second floor of the Leo Kindon Atrium (I know I have). I’ve heard many students wonder what it the painting is supposed to mean, and what it is supposed to be about. Recently, we had the gift of the artist coming and telling us more about his piece and its meaning.
The art piece’s theme is 9/11, one of America’s greatest tragedies. All the parts of the piece are from 9/11, including the flag, the uniform, and the metal. The dress is made out of beautiful fabrics and the skin is made of photos taken during the attack. The flag was one of the only flags still up after the attack because of how old it was. Most of the other flags were taken down because they were so dirty, but this flag was one of the oldest ones in a New York fire station, so they left it up. This piece is truly one of a kind.
Mrs. White, Head of Art Applications, called the art piece “Striking, and very engaging…An amazing way to honor those who passed and show us our country is strong. What was really striking was the use of the materials that the artist had. It feels like there’s a lot of movement involved with the figure.”
This art will always hold a special place in our hearts, as the first big piece in the new middle school. I know that every time I pass it, I’ll find myself staring at it in awe. This piece will always be irreplaceable.
