Malvern has always had a strong connection to the Ronald McDonald house through Jim Murry, a Malvern Prep parent. The focus of the Ronald McDonald house is to provide shelter and food to families whose children are experiencing an illness.
During Read for the House, students make a commitment to read in honor of the Ronald McDonald House. This symbol alone shows support to families with children experiencing illnesses. Students show more tangible support by finding sponsors. Sponsors can do a one-time donation or make a donation based on how many minutes a student reads. Whether a student raises $1 or $100, it means a lot to families and the Ronald McDonald house.
Malvern has been reading for the Ronald McDonald house for about four years, and this is the 2nd time Malvern has done a community read. All the middle school students are reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Students read this book in their homerooms every day for 10 minutes.
When Malvern first started this project, kids were required to bring a book in. Oftentimes, students would forget a book and didn’t have anything to read. Ever since Malvern switched to a community read, kids have read more minutes and raised more money. Raising more money equals better prizes. “These prizes are the best yet!” Mrs. Tyoe added.
Next time you need a charity to donate to, think of the Ronald McDonald House. Consider joining the middle school in Read for the House next year!
